With a strong wrestling pedigree as the son of Dave "Fit" Finlay, David made his NJPW debut during the 2015 Best of the Super Jr. tournament, and entered the New Japan Dojo soon after. In similar no-nonsense style to his father, David made a sudden declaration in September 2016 he had "graduated" from the Young Lion Dojo and set out to make his name in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Later he devised his finisher Prima Nocta, and used it to great effect, winning the NEVER Openweight 6-Man Tag Team title. David Finlay's NJPW journey would be defined by connections he made in his time at the Dojo, however. Jay White would become a rival he would be desperate to beat, while Juice Robinson would become a key ally with whom he won the 2019 World Tag League, and took the IWGP Tag Team Championships at Wrestle Kingdom 14. Though FinJuice's reign was short lived, the duo was inseparable even through the global pandemic and injuries sustained by both men. In March 2021, the two won IMPACT Wrestling's World Tag Team Championships from Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows, all in the midst of Finlay's best career singles run in the New Japan Cup.
